For sure, the work performed by the C-STFT project will have a beneficial impact on future thyroid function testing. Standardized/harmonized assays are fit to address modern clinical and public health needs.
However, there is concern that changes in numerical measurement values and RIs after standardization might be a potential source for misinterpretation. The C-STFT started an outreach program contacting regulatory agencies (US/Chinese FDA, Japan Ministry of Health), clinical community, and patient organizations. Questionnaires were sent to national laboratory societies.
From preliminary interactions, benefits are considered valuable by all stakeholders, but potential risks should not be underestimated. Communication chains exist and it is unlikely changes will not be captured. The C-STFT is committed to preparing healthcare providers/receivers before final implementation.
